Whidbey Island Community Living & Real Estate Information
The Whidbey Island Naval Air Station is a U.S. Navy base located in Island County, Washington. Ault Field is the station's airfield and main facility, where most of the military operations take place. The airfield is equipped with two 8,000-foot long runways and supports EA-6B Prowler, P-3C Orion, EP-3 AIRIES II, C-9 Skytrain and MH-60s Knighthawk aircraft. Ault Field honors Commander William B. Ault for his brave leadership in an instrumental attack on enemy forces in the South Pacific in 1942. Called the Battle of the Coral Sea, the mission resulted in destruction of one enemy carrier and severe damage to another.
Whidbey Island NAS was commissioned in 1942 and played a key role for the navy's West Coast presence during World War II. Situated near Oak Harbor, the base is approximately 80 miles north of Seattle. Located on the eastern shore of Whidbey Island and the edge of Oak Harbor, the Seaplane base houses the Family Service Center, Housing Office, Personal Property, Commissary, Exchange, Navy Lodge and some of the family housing units.
NAS Whidbey is a popular duty location because of the station's excellent quality of life and close relationships with its neighbors. Stationed personnel enjoy enhanced housing whether it's waterfront resort-like housing or single-family dwellings, thorough training programs and many opportunities to interact with neighboring communities. The station has earned positive recognition for its recycling programs, its actions to restore and protect the environment, and its participation in the Drug Education for Youth Program.
